Instead of doing a lot of art I spent more time collating & editing Old photos of
Boddington...for my Residency! I did start some backgrounds though....
I’m just getting ready now to go out to Wandering PS for their first workshop.....
The drive out to Wandering was fantastic...the colour of the land was the ochres of
the summer season.... but it had just been raining & you could smell the
dampness in the air...the trees lining the roads were beautiful...& there
were some gorgeous views over farmlands & open fields! It was very
peaceful...hardly a car on the road!
I felt very welcome when I arrived at the school... Jenny, the Principal, ensured everything was organised and a few of the children told me at lunchtime that they were very excited! Jenny invited a member of the community, who has lived in Wandering since 1962, to come in to
tell some stories of ‘old’. She spoke of colourful characters....changes she had
experienced....and differences between the “Old”way of life & the “New”....the difference in the price of the Headers...carting & loading bales of hay into the trucks by hand....waiting for hours at the grain silo for the trucks to be unloaded...the exodus of the men to Shark Bay for the annual fishing trip after harvest...the Centennial Ball...floods& locusts!
Many of the children were enthralled by her tale about the destruction that the
locusts left in their wake... trees & grape vines, that had been green,
stripped back to their branches in 2 1/2 hrs! They were also fascinated by
pictures of relatives & community members in their youth. I am really
looking forward to working with the children over the next few weeks to create a
series of sculptures for the school that reflect Wandering/Boddington ‘New’
